The Best At Home Facial Routine

I’ve always found facials a bit suspect… Some people have conspiracy theories about Valentine’s Day being a corporate scam to sell heart shaped things, I had one about facials trying to push needless services. This started when I was a teenager with bad skin. I would get a facial ever month praying it would help my skin clear up but instead it made things worse. It wasn’t until years later when I finally had a great facial that I saw the benefits.

However, the myth is that you have to get a facial professionally done to have great results. I’ve been experimenting and perfecting the perfect at home facial for years. Not only is it a welcomed weekly ritual that gives me time to reflect but it’s also helped me to understand my skin and it’s needs more. Below I’ve listed the steps I use for a perfect home facial anytime.

What you will need…

  • oil based facial cleanser

  • water based facial cleanser

  • washcloth

  • face mask (clay-based for oily skin, cream or gel mask for dry skin)

  • toner

  • 5-10 quart pot

  • bath towel

  • make up remover

  • cotton pads

  • serum

  • face moisturizer


  1. Remove all makeup with make up remover and cotton pads.

  2. To dry face, apply oil cleaner. Massage face in circular motions for 5 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

  3. With face still wet, apply water based foaming cleanser. Wet washcloth with hot water and gently exfoliate in circular motions for 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to over do it and irritate the skin! When complete, rinse soap off with warm water and pat skin dry.

  4. The next step is to steam your face. Fill pot with water and bring to boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Hold hand 8” from pot and test the heat. Adjust temperature and distance until you reach a comfortable heat. Once you find the sweet spot, place your face in the steam for 5-10 minutes. If you feel comfortable, drape a bath towel over your the top of your head to capture more steam. Please please be careful during this entire step. Steam can be very hot so exercise caution. Pro tip, add a few drops of Lavender essential oils to the water and try to think positive thoughts.

  5. While your face is still damp from the steam, apply a thin layer of your favorite mask. We recommend a clay base if you have oily skin but a sheet mask works as well. Follow the manufacturers instructions for how long to keep it on.

  6. Rinse face off with warm water, make sure to get all the residue off. Dry skin off with dry towel

  7. With a clean cotton pad, apply your favorite toner and allow to air dry.

  8. Apply a serum. We recommend one with Vitamin C.

  9. Moisturize with a good moisturizer. Good meaning free of fragrance or bad chemicals.

  10. Drink a big glass of water and congratulate yourself on a great week!
